Tips for the Dictation Words

  1. If the students are not getting the pattern, use more dictation words for practice. You should be using enough dictation words for each pattern for the student to internalize the skill. Repetition is the key.                                       1st grade - 10 words                                                                                                                                                                  2nd to 4th grade- 20-25 words
If the students are having problems internalizing the skill, they are not practicing the skills enough or they are jumping around too much.
  2. Use a pencil and appropriate lined paper
  3. Remind students to fingertap
  4. Display new concept card(s) during dictation
  5. Expect good writing/formation
  6. Fingertapping
    1. Correct immediately
    2. Pound and fingertap with one hand and write the word with the other hand
  7. Walk around and observe their spelling or have a partner check
  8. Have them correct their errors for dictation practice
  9. Pound both syllables hot-dog
  10. Hot /h/ /o/ /t/ You want the students to do it automatically
