3rd Grade Latin, Prefix, and Suffix Words

Growing Vocabulary with Morphology

1. Select a few critical words to teach.
2. Introduce words by providing them in written form.
3. Ask students to work with a partner to use their word attack skills to determine the pronunciation and meaning the words.
   1. ​​Students will break the words into chunks using syllables to be able to pronounce the words.
   2. They will then break the words into morphological parts to determine the meanings for each morpheme.
   3. Then, put the meanings together to get the meaning of the entire word.
   Students engage in word study activities such as creating a word matrix by placing the root in the middle of the matrix and adding prefixes and suffixes on each side of the root.
4. Students share the word meanings and their work with the class. 

Rules for reading a word matrix: 

• Read a matrix from left to right. 
  
• Make only single, complete words from a matrix. 
  
• Only build words you can use in a sentence. 
  
• You don’t have to take an element from every column of a matrix – BUT..
  
• You must not ‘leapfrog’ over a column. 
  
• WATCH THE JOINS! Sometimes changes happen where you add a suffix.
